Keeping your boat in good condition is important for a couple reasons. First, it lengthens the lifespan of your craft and ensures good performance. Second, it helps prevent mechanical failures from occurring while on the water, an important aspect of safety. However, it can sometimes be difficult to tell if something is just a normal occurrence or a sign that serious problems are on the horizon. That is why Spring Brook Marina has created this guide to help you determine when you need to schedule a service appointment.

Unusual Sounds and Feelings

If you’ve spent enough time out on your boat, you are probably well acquainted with what the engine sounds like on a normal day. However, if you start to experience any new and unusual sounds or strange vibrations, you should investigate immediately. Whether it takes the form of a grinding noise, vibration felt while steering, or atypical whirs from the engine, it likely signifies a problem that is only going to get worse with time. Talk to your mechanic as soon as possible.

Overheating

It is normal for engines to overheat if pushed too far. However, that does not mean you should disregard it when it happens. Overheating the engines can cause serious damage, especially if it occurs repeatedly, so stay within your vehicle’s limits. However, overheating is sometimes the result of the engine or other piece of equipment producing more heat than it should rather than reckless behavior. If you notice that you are experiencing frequent overheating for either reason, schedule a service appointment.

Leaks

It is fairly obvious that a leak is one of the worst things that can happen to a boat. Even a minor leak with little danger of sinking the craft may become a serious safety hazard and cause serious and ugly damage over time. While some leaks are small enough to be patched at home, the longer you wait the worse things will become.
